It's especially impressive among birds: Most male birds don't have penises, and instead mate by briefly. “Some studies indicate that preference for a larger penis might arise because penis size is associated with higher rates of vaginal orgasm,” the authors wrote. Its penis is a whopping 17 inches long, proportionally the longest of all vertebrates. Study authors were unable to say exactly why women were attracted to a larger penis.

A gorilla’s erection will measure, on average, 1 1/4 inches long - about four times smaller than a human’s. The human penis is also unique when compared to those of other primates, because of its large size. For example, the genitalia of some insects, like honey bees, explodes or breaks off inside the female to prevent other males from reproducing with her. In many other species, sexual organs have evolved in ways that improve fertilization after mating, and not prior to copulation. Mautz and his colleagues wrote that these studies relied mostly on direct questioning and are susceptible to bias and self-censorship. The study contradicts a number of recent papers that conclude genital size is unimportant to most females. “Our results support the hypothesis that female mate choice could have driven the evolution of larger penises in humans.” There is also the hypothesis that higher promiscuity could play a role.“Before clothing, the nonretractable human penis would have been conspicuous to potential mates,” wrote lead author Brian Mautz, an evolution and sexual preference researcher at Australian National University in Canberra. Often it is contrasted with erect chimp penis sizes, which are close to human sizes (genitalia display also plays a role). Members of the subspecies Western lowland gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla) reach 1.7 meters tall while females are only 1.5 meters. Most research is supportive of the latter as a factor. Usually, adult males are 1.7-1.8 meters tall, but Silverbacks typically exceed 1.8 meters. I wonder if the wearing of protective clothing, or having the option of wearing clothing may have something to do with it? The gorilla's might be more vulnerable in that respect. Maybe the human female is built differently, due to having to give birth to babies with enormous heads, so human males need a few more inches. We humans tend to pair off, and females get more say in the matter. Or it could be that Gorillas establish mating rights by being the dominant male of a harem, and females don't get much of a choice, so the big Silverback doesn't need to attract females, he basically acquires them by combat. Humans carrying weapons are less likely to bite or get bitten in a fight. Or it could be that in hand-to-hand fighting, a bigger penis is more vulnerable.

I'm just gonna take this ratio and assume it's the same for girth as well (surely not, but eh.) The average girth of human's dong is around 4.59 inches, so the average girth of a normal gorilla should be around 1.33 inches. It might be that peeing standing upright is easier to control with an extra inch or two. The ratio between the length of a gorilla's peen (1.5 inches) and an average human peen (5.17 inches) is roughly 3.446. It's we humans that have an unusually large one.
